Tour du Mont Blanc When to Go for Open Refuges

The season is set by the refuges, not by the weather: the hut season runs from mid-June to mid-September.

  • in June and September some refuges may not yet be open, or may have closed
  • the Office de Haute Montagne (OHM) in Chamonix publishes refuge opening periods, trail conditions and lift hours
  • Address: Maison de la Montagne, 190 place de l'église, Chamonix
  • Campers: Camping Bellevue in Les Houches was open 26 May – 30 Sep 2026
  • Haute Route hikers share Col de Balme, Trient and Champex; most Haute Route huts close by the end of September
Check each refuge's dates before you fix a June or September start. The stage towns are listed on Tour du Mont Blanc.

Tour du Mont Blanc When to Go to Avoid the Crowds

The quietest good weeks are the edges of the season, because mid-July to mid-August is crowded.

In late August the UTMB, an annual ultramarathon on the same route, brings runners onto the trail; winners finish in about 18–22 hours.

The downside of the quiet edges is snow in June and closing refuges in September. For a guided half-day instead, book the sunset hike with fondue.

Tour du Mont Blanc When to Go FAQ

The first sentence of every answer is the answer.

July and August are the best months to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc, according to the official Mon Tour du Mont-Blanc site, with the best conditions but also the most hikers. Early July comes before the crowded mid-July to mid-August weeks, though snow can linger on passes into early July. The full season runs from mid-June to mid-September. Add a lift day in the same window with the cable car and train day.

Yes, from mid-June, but June is the hardest month: passes can stay snow-covered until the end of June or early July, and light crampons, poles or even an ice axe can be needed. Some refuges may not be open yet. The Lac Blanc routes are unsafe through late June. If you go in June, read the hazards in is the Tour du Mont Blanc dangerous.

Yes, until about mid-September, when the hut season ends, though some refuges may have closed earlier. September is quieter than the crowded mid-July to mid-August weeks. In 2026 the Bellevue cable car in Les Houches closed on 14 September and Camping Bellevue on 30 September. On a September rest day in Courmayeur, the Italian side had lift dates on sale until 1 November 2026: the Skyway ticket.

Not as a hut-to-hut trek: the refuge season runs only from mid-June to mid-September, so in October you would have no half-board nights along most of the route. October visitors are better served by day tours in Chamonix, where the Aiguille du Midi runs on autumn hours until 1 November 2026. See the options on best time for Mont Blanc tour.

For the Chamonix and Tour du Mont Blanc forecast, La Chamoniarde recommends Météo France, Chamonix-météo, MeteoSuisse and Meteoblue. The Office de Haute Montagne at the Maison de la Montagne in Chamonix also gathers trail conditions, refuge opening periods and avalanche reports. Check the forecast before each stage and leave early, because storms are a main TMB hazard. Read what to do in a storm on is Tour du Mont Blanc dangerous.

The Tour du Mont Blanc is most crowded from mid-July to mid-August, according to La Chamoniarde. A summer 2025 study counted around 75,000 hikers on the route, and refuges are often fully booked several weeks ahead in high season. Late August also brings the UTMB race to Chamonix. To dodge the peak, walk in early July or late August to mid-September, and plan your stages on Tour du Mont Blanc.

Book as soon as bookings open: for the 2027 season that is 15 October 2026 on the official Mon Tour du Mont-Blanc site. La Chamoniarde notes reservations start as early as April–May, but high-season refuges fill several weeks ahead. From spring 2027, every night on the French section must be reserved. Price your nights first on Tour du Mont Blanc hike cost.

The UTMB, the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, runs at the end of August each year along the Tour du Mont Blanc route; in 2026 the race week ran in Chamonix from 24 to 30 August. Winners complete the loop in about 18–22 hours. Hikers on the trail that week share it with runners. If you are in Chamonix that week, a lift day avoids the trail entirely: the cable car and train day.

Whichever summer week you pick, start it with the view from the top.

The cable car and train day costs from €215 per person with the Aiguille du Midi cable car and Montenvers train included. Pick a date: the live calendar
