“Was an absolute stunning adventure I exceeded all my expectations. The tour guild was amazing really knowledgeable. Doing everything that was included which was the cable cart up to the mountain offered a breathtaking view at the top. Even the ice caves that were man made was a sight to see. Highly recommend”

Beyond the tour — the mountain, the lifts and the seasons
Mont Blanc Tourism Beyond the Tour: What the Valley Offers
Mont Blanc tourism runs on three lifts and one town. Chamonix, at 1,035 m on the French side, is where the day tours from Geneva stop, where the Aiguille du Midi cable car and the Montenvers train leave, and where the Tour du Mont Blanc passes on its last two stages. Courmayeur, through the 11.6 km Mont Blanc tunnel opened in 1965, is the Italian base and the start of the Skyway Monte Bianco. Everything a visitor books around the massif is some mix of these.
The mountain itself
Mont Blanc measured 4,807 m in the 2025 survey; the height moves with the ice cap, and in 2023 it was 4,805.59 m. It was first climbed on 8 August 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard. The summit sits on the border of France and Italy, and where exactly the line runs is still disputed. A day visitor does not stand on it: the highest ticket you can buy is the Aiguille du Midi terrace at 3,842 m, which looks straight across at the dome.
3,842 mthe Aiguille du Midi terrace — from 1,035 m in about 20 minutes, the largest vertical rise of any cable car in the world.
Three rides above the valley
The Aiguille du Midi cable car opened in 1955 and climbs in two sections, via Plan de l'Aiguille at 2,317 m. An adult return costs €60.20–83.00 in 2026, the price moving with demand, and the time-slot reservation is free and mandatory. At the top, the Step into the Void is a glass box with a 1,035 m drop below it, free to enter when crowds, frost and wind allow.
The Montenvers rack railway runs from Chamonix to 1,913 m above the Mer de Glace; the adult return is €31.50. A gondola and steps lead down to the ice cave, which closed for the autumn on 28 September. On the Italian side the Skyway Monte Bianco, opened on 23 June 2015, turns its 80-person cabins through 360° on the way from 1,300 m to Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m.
The point
A tour decides only two things: whether the lift tickets are in the price and whether someone else drives. The rides, the heights and the closures are the same for everyone.
Seasons and closures
Summer, from late June to early September, is the only time everything is open at once and the time the Tour du Mont Blanc huts are staffed. The lifts close for maintenance every autumn: in 2026 the Aiguille du Midi stops from 2 November to 18 December according to Compagnie du Mont-Blanc, and the tour operators list the widest window, to 19 December; the Montenvers train closes 2 November – 4 December. Winter brings the snowshoe walks and the ski day from Geneva; spring brings the cable car back before the summer crowds.
On your own or with a tour
Going alone costs about €116–155 a day from Geneva: a bus at €12–20 each way, about 1 h 25 min on the A40, plus the lift and the train bought at the station. The coach tours cost €84–104 without the tickets and €215–227 with them, and they take care of the reservation and the timing. This site sets every Mont Blanc tour sold on GetYourGuide against that do-it-yourself total, so the gap is visible before you book.
Questions exactly as people ask them — both meanings of the word
Mont Blanc Tour Questions
Is a Mont Blanc tour worth it?
Yes, if the cable car is in your plan: the Aiguille du Midi terrace at 3,842 m is the highest a non-climber gets on the massif, and the Ice Cave Guided Day Tour (★4.9 from 783 reviews) does it in nine hours from Geneva. No, if you only want the valley — Chamonix on its own is a bus ride from €12.
How much does a Mont Blanc tour from Geneva cost?
€84–104 per person for a coach with the transport and free time or a guide, with the lift tickets on top; €215–227 with the cable car and the Montenvers train included on the most-booked tours; private day trips from €962 per car for one to eight people, which the listing advertises as "from €481 per person". Bus and lifts on your own come to roughly €116–155. Prices checked 30 September 2026; they move with the season.
Is the cable car included in a Mont Blanc tour?
Only on the tours that name it: the Day Trip with Cable Car and Train at €215 and the €227 option of the Ice Cave tour include the Aiguille du Midi cable car and the Montenvers train. The €84–104 coach tours stop in Chamonix; the adult return to 3,842 m is €60.20–83.00 at the station, and the reservation is free but mandatory. Every card on this site says whether the lift is in the price.
How high does a Mont Blanc tour take you?
3,842 m if the Aiguille du Midi cable car is in your day, 1,035 m if you stay in Chamonix. The cable car stops at 2,317 m and then the summit terrace; the Montenvers train reaches 1,913 m above the Mer de Glace; from Courmayeur the Skyway goes to 3,466 m. The height scale on every card on this site shows the highest stop that product reaches.
Can you go to the top of Mont Blanc on a tour?
Not on a day tour. The 4,807 m summit is a two-day guided climb via the Goûter route, €1,154–3,360 with a guide at 1:2, and our partner does not sell it. The highest point you can buy a ticket to is the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 m, where you look across at the summit.
How long is a Mont Blanc day tour from Geneva?
Nine to ten hours door to door. The coach takes about 1 h 25 min each way along the A40, which leaves five to six hours in Chamonix; if you take the cable car, two to three of them go on the lift and the terrace.
What is the Tour du Mont Blanc?
A 168 km walking trail around the massif through France, Italy and Switzerland in eleven stages, usually nine to fourteen days, with 8,917 m of ascent and passes up to 2,665 m. GetYourGuide sells it neither as a package nor as guided stages (checked 30 Sep 2026), so you book the huts yourself. The trek hub on this site covers the stages, hut nights, costs and the season.
Can you do the Tour du Mont Blanc in one day?
Not the loop, which takes nine to fourteen days — but one stage makes a full day. Stage 5, Courmayeur to Rifugio Bonatti, is 12 km and about 4 h 30 min with 860 m of climbing, facing the whole massif. No guided stage is on sale on GetYourGuide (checked 30 Sep 2026), so you walk it on your own and take the bus back down the Val Ferret.
Do I need a passport for a Mont Blanc day tour from Geneva?
Yes. The coach leaves Geneva in Switzerland and crosses into France before Chamonix, so every adult carries a passport or a national ID card valid for the Schengen area; the Glass-Roof Bus Tour listing asks for it in its know-before-you-go notes. Tours that continue through the Mont Blanc tunnel to Courmayeur cross into Italy too. Children need their own document.
When are the cable car and the ice cave closed in 2026?
The Aiguille du Midi cable car closes for maintenance from 2 November to 19 December 2026 and the Montenvers train from 2 November to 4 December, and the Mer de Glace ice cave is closed from 28 September to 18 December. Compagnie du Mont-Blanc publishes 2 November – 18 December; the tour operators list the widest dates. Between those closures the coach tours still run to Chamonix, without the lift.
Do I need to book the Aiguille du Midi cable car in advance?
Yes — the time-slot reservation is free and mandatory, even if your tour includes the ticket. Tours with the tickets in the price, such as the €227 option of the Ice Cave tour, book the slot for you. On a coach tour without tickets you book the slot yourself before the day, pay €60.20–83.00 for the adult return at the station, and plan your free time around the slot.
Is a Mont Blanc tour suitable for children and seniors?
The coach tours are lift-and-pavement days with no hiking; the Ice Cave Guided Day Tour takes children from 3, and under-5s ride the cable car free. The terrace at 3,842 m is thin air for everyone — move slowly, and stop at the Montenvers train at 1,913 m if the height is a worry.
How tall is Mont Blanc?
4,807 m in the 2025 survey. The figure changes with the snow and ice on the summit dome: the 2023 measurement, taken after a dry summer, gave 4,805.59 m. Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps and in Western Europe. On a day tour you see it from the Aiguille du Midi terrace at 3,842 m, which faces the summit across the Vallée Blanche, or from Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m on the Italian side.
Is Mont Blanc in France or Italy?
Both: the massif is shared by France and Italy, with Switzerland to the north-east, and the exact line across the summit is still disputed. Chamonix and the Aiguille du Midi are in France; Courmayeur and the Skyway Monte Bianco are in Italy, 11.6 km away through the Mont Blanc tunnel. The Tour du Mont Blanc walks through all three countries in eleven stages.
What is the Step into the Void at the Aiguille du Midi?
A glass box on the summit terrace at 3,842 m with a 1,035 m drop beneath your feet, opened in December 2013. It is free once you are at the top, but entry is not guaranteed: it closes when the queue is too long, in frost or in strong wind. Every tour that includes the Aiguille du Midi cable car gets you to it; the guided tours give you time on the terrace.
Who first climbed Mont Blanc?
Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, on 8 August 1786, from Chamonix. Their climb is counted as the start of modern mountaineering. Today the normal route, the Goûter, takes two days with a night in the Goûter hut, and a guided climb costs about €1,154–3,360 a person. No tour sold on GetYourGuide goes to the summit; the highest you can buy a ticket to is the Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 m.
Is there a Mont Blanc tour from the Italian side?
Yes: the Skyway Monte Bianco, the cable car from Courmayeur opened on 23 June 2015. It climbs from Pontal d'Entrèves near Courmayeur at 1,300 m to the Pavillon at 2,173 m and Punta Helbronner at 3,466 m, and its 80-person cabins turn through 360° on the way up. A return ticket on our partner was €59 for an adult on 30 September 2026; its calendar showed dates to 1 November.
