Mid-June to mid-September. The official Tour du Mont-Blanc website calls this the ideal season, with July and August giving the best conditions and also the most walkers. The loop is 168 km with 8,917 m of ascent over 11 stages, usually 9–14 days, through France, Italy and Switzerland; the highest passes reach 2,665 m.
The season is set by the huts. Outside it most of them are closed, and the trek stops being practical as a hut-to-hut walk. Inside it, beds go early: the official site warns that in high season refuges and accommodation are often fully booked several weeks in advance.

For a taste of the trek without the loop, walk a single stage in the hut season; stage 5 out of Courmayeur is 12 km to Rifugio Bonatti. Guided day hikes round Chamonix have dates through next summer, from €235 per person.
