How Hard and Dangerous Is the Tour du Mont Blanc for Children

The full loop is not for young children: La Chamoniarde calls it unsuitable under 8–10 years.

Children under 12 should not walk more than 6 hours a day, which rules out the 7:30 h stage 2 as a single day.

With older children, a section of the route makes more sense than the loop. For a family day with no long walk, the Montenvers train reaches the Mer de Glace at 1,913 m (train ticket in the full option): the ice cave guided day.

Is Tour du Mont Blanc Dangerous? FAQ

The first sentence of every answer is the answer.

No, the Tour du Mont Blanc is not technical on its main route in summer: it is a maintained, signposted path. It becomes harder when snow covers the passes, up to the end of June or early July, when crampons, poles and even an ice axe can be needed. The ladders toward Lac Blanc are optional and can be bypassed. For a taste of the terrain with an expert, book the personalized guided hike.

You need to be fit enough to walk 5–9 hours a day and climb about 700–1,000 m daily, for 9–14 days in a row. La Chamoniarde describes it as within everyone's reach if well trained and used to rough terrain, with about six hours of walking every day. One trek operator advises beginners to train for 4–6 months. Read the stage-by-stage numbers on Tour du Mont Blanc.

Yes, you can walk the Tour du Mont Blanc self-guided, but alone you must read a topographic map and judge the weather yourself, which La Chamoniarde expects of TMB hikers. Save the emergency numbers: 112 in France and Italy, 144 in Switzerland. Inexperienced hikers are advised to join a club or a group with a certified mountain leader. To see the self-guided options and prices, read the Tour du Mont Blanc hike cost guide.

June is the riskiest month of the season on the Tour du Mont Blanc, because snow can cover the passes until the end of June or early July, and snowfields above the tree line are not uncommon. The Lac Blanc routes are unsafe through late June. Some refuges may also not be open yet. If your dates are flexible, aim for July to mid-September, as explained in Tour du Mont Blanc, when to go.

They can be for people who dislike heights: there are 9 sets of metal ladders above Tré-le-Champ toward Lac Blanc, and the tallest is about 8 m. You do not have to climb them, because the whole section can be bypassed via Col des Montets. The Lac Blanc approaches are also described by the Chamonix tourist office as sometimes aerial. For big views without exposure, ride up with the cable car and train day.

The Fenêtre d'Arpette is the harder variant of the Champex–Trient stage: rated difficult by the local tourist office, it climbs to 2,665 m over 14.6 km with +1,199 m and −1,387 m in about 5 h 55 min. The office says it should not be attempted in poor weather. The main route via Col de la Forclaz avoids it. See how it fits the whole loop on Tour du Mont Blanc.

La Chamoniarde calls the Tour du Mont Blanc unsuitable for children under 8–10 years, and says children under 12 should not walk more than 6 hours a day. That makes the full loop a realistic goal for teenagers rather than young children. Families with younger children can see glaciers without long walks: the Montenvers train reaches 1,913 m on the ice cave guided day (train ticket in the full option).

A summer 2025 study recorded around 75,000 hikers on the Tour du Mont Blanc. From spring 2027, through-hikers on the French section will need a reservation for every night, in a refuge, hotel, campsite or authorised bivouac area. In high season, refuges are often fully booked several weeks ahead. Plan your bookings with Tour du Mont Blanc hike cost.

The safest first step is a day with a local guide who adapts the route to your level.
