How Much Does It Cost to Hike the Tour du Mont Blanc

On your own, plan on €140–190 a day. That covers a bed in a hut with dinner and breakfast, a lunch on the trail and, on some days, a bus or a lift. Over the usual 10–11 days it adds up to about €1,600–2,000 per person, before you pay to reach the start.

Bed and half board
€90–130 a night — dinner, bed and breakfast
Lunch and snacks
€10–25 a day
Transfers and luggage
€15–30 a day, when you use them
Travel and insurance
about €20 a day in the same estimate

The range is wide for a reason: the country you sleep in moves the price more than anything else. A night with half board costs €60–85 in Italy, €75–100 in France and €100–130 in Switzerland. How many buses and lifts you take is the second lever.

Tour du Mont Blanc Hike Cost Night by Night

The standard route runs anticlockwise in 11 stages from Les Houches and back, so you sleep ten nights on the trail. Four of them fall in France, three in Italy and three in Switzerland. Priced at the half-board range for each country, the beds alone come to €780–1,045.

  1. 1Les Contamines France · €75–100 half board
  2. 2Les Chapieux France · €75–100
  3. 3Rifugio Elisabetta Italy · €60–85
  4. 4Courmayeur Italy · €60–85 in a hut · the one town on the loop
  5. 5Rifugio Bonatti Italy · €60–85
  6. 6La Fouly Switzerland · €100–130
  7. 7Champex Switzerland · €100–130
  8. 8Col de la Forclaz Switzerland · €100–130
  9. 9Tré-le-Champ France · €75–100
  10. 10Refuge de la Flégère France · €75–100 · stage 11 ends in Les Houches

Add lunch at €10–25 a day and the extras below, and the loop lands inside the €1,600–2,000 range. Walk it in nine days by joining stages and you save a night; take fourteen with rest days and you add four.

The point
The three Swiss nights cost about as much as the four French ones. If you need to cut, a rest day belongs on the Italian side, not in Switzerland.

The Extras That Raise the Hike Cost

Half board covers dinner, the bed and breakfast. Everything else is paid on the spot, often in cash, and the small lines are the ones that stretch a budget over eleven days.

Drinks in huts
€3–6 each
Showers
€2–4 — some huts sell tokens
Tourist tax
€1–2 a night, sometimes not in the room price
A bus or a lift
€5–15 a ride
Bellevue cable car, Les Houches
€18.90 one way, 994 m to 1,800 m in 5 min — skips the first climb of stage 1

A sleeping bag liner is expected in the huts; blankets are provided. Bring cash in euros and Swiss francs for extras — three nights of the loop are in Switzerland.

Tour Packages vs Going Independent

A package moves the booking work to someone else. Self-guided means an agency reserves the huts in your name and sends the route; you walk alone. Guided means an operator also sends a guide with the group. Independent means you book each hut yourself on the booking site or directly.

Independent, in huts
about €1,600–2,000 for the loop, at €140–190 a day
Self-guided, huts
€1,595–1,750 for 10 days / 9 nights
Self-guided, comfort hotels
€1,900–2,250 for 9 days
Half the loop, self-guided
€750–900 (east) or €825–875 (west), 5 days
Mini-TMB, self-guided
€250–450 for 2–3 days
Guided departures
€1,089–4,995 at World Discovery
The compromise
A self-guided package in huts costs about the same as doing it yourself. What you pay for is the booking: in July and August the popular huts fill early, and an agency that holds the beds saves you a stage-by-stage puzzle.

An older operator estimate put a fully independent trek at about €840 for 10–11 days in huts. It used hut prices below today’s; with the current half-board ranges, the ten nights alone cost more than that.

Camping to Cut the Hike Cost

A tent brings the cost down, but not to zero, and not everywhere. The same older estimate put a camping trek at about €330. Campsites charge per person and per tent; Camping Bellevue in Les Houches, near the start, lists €8 a night for an adult, shower and tourist tax included, plus €4–5.50 for the tent.

adult €8 · tent €4–5.50 · open 26 May – 30 Sep 2026
Aosta Valley (Italy)
no camping outside campsites; bivouac banned below 2,500 m; fine €566
Switzerland
wild camping and bivouac prohibited

In Italy and Switzerland you camp at campsites or you pay the hut. On the French section the rules tighten in 2027, and a camping trek still means carrying the tent, stove and food over 168 km.

Five choices that move the total

Where the Hike Cost Can Be Cut

  1. 1Put rest days in Italy Half board is €60–85 there against €100–130 in Switzerland.
  2. 2Walk fewer days Nine days instead of eleven saves two nights; it also means longer stages.
  3. 3Walk half the loop Five days self-guided is €750–900 — or plan the same half yourself.
  4. 4Carry lunch from the valley Lunch runs €10–25 a day; food carried from a valley shop keeps that line low.
  5. 5Book early The 2027 season opens on 15 October 2026. A full hut can mean a hotel off the route and a transfer.

Walk One Stage Before the Trek

GetYourGuide sells no guided TMB stage or TMB trek. The guided TMB stage days sold this summer were taken off GetYourGuide (checked 30 Sep 2026), so a test day on the trail is one you walk on your own.

A day on the trail tells you what the loop feels like in your legs, and what you would carry. For a guide in the same valleys, the Val Veny & Val Ferret tour from Courmayeur is a day by e-bike at €199 per person, ★5.0 from 2 reviews, but on 30 Sep 2026 it had only 1 and 2 October open and no 2027 dates.

Questions about the money, as people ask them

Tour du Mont Blanc Cost Questions

How much does the Tour du Mont Blanc cost per day?
About €140–190 a day if you walk on your own and sleep in huts. The largest line is the bed with half board at €90–130; lunch and snacks add €10–25, and a bus, lift or luggage transfer €15–30 on the days you use one. A self-guided booking at an agency works out at €170–190 a day. Prices are 2025–2026 ranges; each hut sets its own.
How much is a night in a hut on the TMB?
With dinner and breakfast, €60–85 in Italy, €75–100 in France and €100–130 in Switzerland, on 2025–2026 prices. Half board means the night, dinner and breakfast; showers at €2–4, drinks at €3–6 and sometimes a tourist tax of €1–2 are extra. Bring a sleeping bag liner — blankets are provided — and cash in euros and Swiss francs for the extras.
Is it cheaper to do the TMB self-guided or independently?
They cost about the same. On your own the loop comes to about €1,600–2,000 in huts; a self-guided package for 10 days and 9 nights in huts is €1,595–1,750. The package buys the booking work and the route notes, which matters in July and August when popular huts fill early. With comfort hotels instead of huts, self-guided rises to €1,900–2,250.
How much does a guided Tour du Mont Blanc cost?
Guided departures at World Discovery, one of the full-trek operators, run from €1,089 to €4,995, depending on the length, the beds and the group size. Our partner sells no guided trek and no guided TMB stage (checked 30 Sep 2026). The nearest guided day is the Val Veny & Val Ferret tour from Courmayeur, a day by e-bike at €199 per person.
Can you camp on the TMB to save money?
Yes, at campsites, and it is the cheapest bed on the loop — an older estimate put a camping trek at about €330. Camping Bellevue in Les Houches lists €8 an adult plus €4–5.50 for a tent. Wild camping is prohibited in Switzerland and in the Aosta Valley, where the fine is €566, and from spring 2027 the French section needs a reservation for every night.
Which is the most expensive part of the TMB?
Switzerland. Half board there costs €100–130 a night against €60–85 in Italy, and on the standard stages you sleep three nights on the Swiss side: La Fouly, Champex and Col de la Forclaz. Those three nights cost €300–390, about as much as the four French nights together. Carry Swiss francs as well as euros for the extras on that section of the loop.
When should I book the huts for the TMB?
On 15 October 2026, the day the official booking site opens reservations for the 2027 season; the busiest stages go first. July and August are the peak; in June and September some huts are not yet open or have already closed. From spring 2027, through-hikers on the French section will need a booking for every night — refuge, hotel, campsite or an authorised bivouac area.
What does the TMB cost in total with travel?
Plan on about €1,600–2,000 per person for the walk itself, plus getting to the start. From Geneva, the public bus to Chamonix takes 1 h 25 min and costs from €12; Les Houches, where stage 1 begins, is in the same valley. Travel insurance is part of the daily estimate at about €20 a day. Check that your cover includes mountain hiking in all three countries.
