Both stages are straightforward to walk on your own in the hut season. Stage 4 comes 18 km down from Rifugio Elisabetta through Val Veny, about 5 h with 1,560 m of descent. Stage 5 climbs 12 km out of town to Rifugio Bonatti on the balcony above Val Ferret, about 4 h 30 min with 860 m up. Hut half board on the Italian side is €60–85 a night.

Tour du Mont Blanc from Courmayeur: Starting in Italy

Courmayeur is the usual start point on the Italian side. Because the TMB is a loop, starting here changes only the order. Walking anticlockwise, the standard direction, you climb to Rifugio Bonatti on stage 5, cross into Switzerland on stage 6, come back into France on stage 9 and reach Les Houches after seven stages and 101 km; the four stages from Les Houches to Courmayeur then close the loop.

Coming from Chamonix, the Arriva Italia bus through the 11.6 km Mont Blanc Tunnel costs from €15 single, and a seat reservation is mandatory — online, at the ticket offices in Courmayeur or Aosta, or on board if seats are left.

Tour du Mont Blanc Les Chapieux to Courmayeur: Stages 3 and 4

Stage 3 leaves Les Chapieux, the last night in France, and crosses into Italy to Rifugio Elisabetta: 15 km, about 4 h 30 min, with 1,004 m up and 258 m down. Stage 4 runs 18 km from Rifugio Elisabetta down to Courmayeur in about 5 h, with 460 m of climbing and 1,560 m of descent. Together they make 33 km and about 9 h 30 min of walking.

No guided day on stage 4 is on sale any more, so this one is walked on your own. Poles help on the long descent, and finishing in town puts you next to the Skyway for a rest day and the bus to Chamonix.

Stage 5 climbs out of Courmayeur to Rifugio Bonatti: 12 km, about 4 h 30 min, 860 m up and only 101 m down. Stage 6 continues 20 km from Rifugio Bonatti to La Fouly in Switzerland, about 6 h 30 min, with 895 m of ascent and 1,410 m of descent — the longest stage of the loop.

Taken together, the Courmayeur – La Fouly Tour du Mont Blanc crossing is 32 km and about 11 hours of walking, with 1,755 m of climbing. Stage 5 follows the balcony between the Bertone and Bonatti lodges, with Mont Blanc across the valley; the guided day on it has been taken off sale, so you walk it yourself.
