At the summit with the guide
The first part is a two-hour guided tour of the Aiguille du Midi, says the itinerary. The guide specialises in these two sites, in glaciology and in the history of mountaineering, and tells the story of the expeditions and climbers who opened up the high Alps. A telescope and demonstration equipment are reserved for your group. The cable car, opened in 1955, climbs from Chamonix at 1,035 m to the summit at 3,842 m in about 20 minutes.
Until 1 November 2026 the cable car opens at 08:10, the last return trip up is at 15:00 and the last cabin down at 16:30, so a seven-hour day with a hike in the middle has little slack. Agree the start time with the guide before you reserve your cable car slot.
The Balcon Nord, if you choose it
The optional middle part is a hike on the Balcon Nord, a trail through the Aiguilles de Chamonix, with the guide telling you how this relief was formed and a picnic with a view — which you bring. The itinerary lists two hours of hiking, the description about three. It is not offered in winter. One July 2026 reviewer walked it between the summit and Montenvers and rode the rack railway down at the end.
The afternoon at the Mer de Glace
Montenvers looks down on the largest glacier in the French Alps. The guide explains how glaciers form and move and what that says about the climate, and the history of the site from its early explorers to the tourist station it is now. The cogwheel train takes you back to Chamonix. Until 1 November the train runs 08:30–16:30; the gondola down to the ice was closed from 28 September to 16 October, and the ice cave is closed until 18 December.

All 20 reviews average five stars, and every review quote we hold names the same guide, Olivier, for his knowledge of mountaineering history and glaciers and for his patience with first-timers. One reviewer in January 2026 lost the Aiguille du Midi to strong wind and spent the day at the Mer de Glace instead, and still rated it five stars. The listing does not say what happens to the plan when the summit is shut — ask the guide when you book.
Who the guided tour suits
The listing sells the day as a private experience for you and your friends or family, led in French or English. It rules out children under 10, and it asks everyone to bring hiking shoes, warm clothing, sunglasses and a reusable water bottle — the summit is at 3,842 m even in July. There is no transport: you meet the guide at the cable car in Chamonix, so the tour suits people already staying in the valley.
