The three options, one by one
The €90 Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Excursion is the return bus from Geneva and nothing else. The €155 Chamonix Excursion with Mountain Train adds a walk through the streets and the red Montenvers train from the village centre to the glacier, 20 minutes each way, with an English booklet. The €200 Excursion with Cable Car Ride adds a ride up the Aiguille du Midi. All three give eight hours; the first and third name English under “Guide”, although the listing excludes a guide.
Against the station prices, the ticket options cost more than the tickets. The train option is €66 above the bus-only one, while the Montenvers return is €31.50 at the station; the cable car option is €110 above it, against €60.20–83.00 for the Aiguille du Midi return. Buying at the station saves money, but you then reserve the cable car slot yourself — free, and mandatory.
Chamonix on your own
The free time is the day. The listing sketches the town: it grew in the Victorian era, hosted the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and calls itself the capital of all-mountain skiing. You get a map and your own hours for the boutiques — designer and mountain brands — for local cheese, cured meats and fresh honey, and for fondue or raclette in a mountain restaurant, all at your own cost.
Which option in which season
Until 1 November 2026 the Montenvers train runs 08:30–16:30, and the last return trip up the Aiguille du Midi leaves at 15:00, so on the ticket options plan the lift or the train early in your free time. From 2 November to 19 December both are closed for maintenance, which leaves the €90 bus as the only option worth booking. The ice cave the highlights mention is closed from 28 September to 18 December.
What reviewers mention
Reviewers who wanted freedom got it: one liked doing what they wanted when they wanted, and another found the town easy to get round without a guide, with enough time for the main sights. One had hoped for a short tour of Chamonix for the price, and one was unsure about the bus back.
In December 2023 a reviewer found attractions shut for maintenance, and the person on the bus found them other things to do. Across 127 reviews transport scores 4.2, the guide 3.8 and value for money 3.7.
